Georgia CNA certification: stay active, lapse, and transfer rules

You must be compensated as a CNA and work a minimum of 8 hours every 24 consecutive months under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. You report your own work through the Nurse Aide Program Portal with a pay stub or W-2, your employer's name/address/phone, and your employer signing Section A of the renewal form (private-duty work needs a notarized statement naming the supervising RN/LPN and license number instead). No renewal fee and no grace period.

Is my certification still active?

If you have never worked for pay since certifying, use your certification date.

Continuing educationNo registry CE requirement. Federally certified facilities separately require 12 hours/year of in-service for aides they employ - that is an employment rule, not the registry renewal rule.

Changing soon: Alliant program document is revised quarterly (copy read was Rev. 08/2025, Q3-2026 file) - recheck the 1-year retrain line each quarter.

If your Georgia certification has lapsed

The cheaper route — while it lasts

If you missed the 8-hour work requirement, you must take and pass the written/oral and skills competency examination again to update your certification (Alliant Nurse Aide Training Program document, Rev. 08/2025). This retest-only route applies while the certification has been expired less than 1 year from the registry expiration date.

Past that line

If the certification has been expired 1 year or more from the registry expiration date, you must complete a NEW state-approved 85-hour training program and then pass both parts of the competency exam before your certification is updated for a new 2 years (Alliant, Rev. 08/2025).

TRAP - SHORTEST RETRAIN CLOCK IN THIS BATCH: Georgia's own Alliant document puts the retrain line at 1 YEAR after expiration, not the 2-3 years quoted by most secondary sites (which variously say 2 or 3 years). Trust the Alliant document and re-verify at launch. Also: only 1 year and 3 attempts to pass both exam parts after training - tighter than most states.

Transferring INTO Georgia

Application fee: $0 · typical processing: Several weeks, depending on how fast your home state verifies (secondary-source estimate).. Reciprocity through Alliant Health Solutions: active, unencumbered out-of-state certification in good standing, verification sent directly from your current state registry, proof of certification and employment, photo ID and Social Security card, and GCHEXS background screening. No reciprocity fee. Work-history requirement: At least 8 hours of paid CNA work under RN supervision within the past 2 years..

The table below is computed for an active aide in good standing, trained to the origin state's standard hours. Your own hours or status can change your row — run the transfer checker with your real facts.
