Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) · rules checked October 22, 2026

Kansas CNA certification: stay active, lapse, and transfer rules

You must work at least 8 paid hours as a nurse aide in every 24 months and file the Employment Verification Form, signed by your employer, with KDADS Health Occupations Credentialing. Work in a doctor's office or clinic does NOT count toward the 8 hours.

Is my certification still active?

If you have never worked for pay since certifying, use your certification date.

Checked in part: most of Kansas's rules were confirmed on primary sources on October 22, 2026, but a few details could only be confirmed in part. Where a figure is marked "not published," use the registry link on this page to confirm — we would rather show you the gap than fill it with a guess.

Continuing educationNo continuing education is required to stay active; an aide who has not met the work rule can instead complete a KDADS-approved refresher course (see lapse routes).

The cheaper route — while it lasts

Miss the 24-month work window and Kansas restores eligibility through training, not a registry exam: complete a KDADS-approved CNA refresher course, OR an RN-administered skills/task checklist completed at a hospital, long-term care facility or school lab (not through a home health agency), which the RN submits to KDADS (K.S.A. 39-936(c)(8); KDADS refresher-course guidance).

Past that line

Kansas publishes no longer-lapse retraining tier in its statutes or administrative rules: the refresher/checklist route is the route back at any gap length we could find in K.A.R. 26-50. (Secondary sites describe a 5-year line after which the full 90-hour course is required; that tier does not appear in the Kansas rules — confirm with KDADS Health Occupations Credentialing before relying on it.)

Kansas is unusual: a lapsed aide comes back through a short refresher course or a skills checklist, not through an exam — and the same refresher route can be used at renewal if you are not currently employed. The 8 work hours cannot be earned in a doctor's office or clinic. The state test itself costs $20 per scheduled attempt under K.A.R. 26-50-24 (it is a written test; skills are demonstrated through the training task checklist, not a separate skills exam fee). Any additional test-site charges are not published in the rules, so no combined total is printed.

Transferring INTO Kansas

Application fee: Not published — confirm with the registry · typical processing: About 4-6 weeks once a complete application is received (secondary source).. Under K.A.R. 26-50-26 and K.S.A. 39-936(d), a person employed as a nurse aide in another state may be employed in Kansas WITHOUT taking the Kansas state test if KDADS determines the other state's training or examination is at least equal to Kansas's. If equivalency is not granted, the test path allows ONE attempt at the state test; fail it and you must complete the 90-hour Kansas course before testing again. The only fee in the rule is the $20 state-test application fee — K.A.R. 26-50-26 sets no separate endorsement fee. Work-history requirement: Must be active in good standing on the home-state registry.. Older interstate-application reproductions describe a $20 'application fee' and a mandatory challenge exam through a testing vendor. In the current rule the $20 is the state-test fee, and the exam is conditional on the equivalency decision — Kansas is not the automatic-retest state the older guides describe.

The table below is computed for an active aide in good standing, trained to the origin state's standard hours. Your own hours or status can change your row — run the transfer checker with your real facts.
