Nebraska CNA certification: stay active, lapse, and transfer rules

Stay active by working as a nurse aide in a paid position within 24 months of your last date of previous employment (secondary guides quantify this as at least 8 hours of paid nurse aide work in a Nebraska-licensed healthcare setting every 24 months). No renewal application or fee is required; employment keeps/reports your active status.

Keep-active work ruleStay active by working as a nurse aide in a paid position within 24 months of your last date of previous employment (secondary guides quantify this as at least 8 hours of paid nurse aide work in a Nebraska-licensed healthcare setting every 24 months). No renewal application or fee is required; employment keeps/reports your active status.
Continuing educationNo continuing education requirement to stay on the registry. Training includes a 1-hour abuse/neglect/misappropriation component (see training note).
Who reports your workYour employer does — if they fail to, you can show as inactive while working

Changing soon: The state-approved course is universally marketed as a 76-hour class: the 75-hour statutory minimum plus the 1-hour Nebraska abuse/neglect training. Exam fees are set by the approved testing provider ($50 written + $50 clinical at NHCLC).

If your Nebraska certification has lapsed

The cheaper route — while it lasts

A lapsed nurse aide reactivates by retaking and passing both the written/oral and clinical exams through an approved re-competency testing provider (both may be taken the same day; allow about three weeks for records to update). No retraining is required, except nurse aides who took a 30-hour course before 1989 and were grandfathered must take the full 75-hour nurse aide course instead of retesting.

Past that line

A lapsed nurse aide reactivates by retaking and passing both the written/oral and clinical exams through an approved re-competency testing provider (both may be taken the same day; allow about three weeks for records to update). No retraining is required, except nurse aides who took a 30-hour course before 1989 and were grandfathered must take the full 75-hour nurse aide course instead of retesting.

Nebraska issues no paper certificates or license cards for nurse aides; verification is online and a wallet card can be generated from the registry record.

Registry findings in Nebraska

Nebraska has a published process to petition for removal of a single, neglect-only registry finding after at least 1 year. Abuse and misappropriation findings cannot be removed. Details — free, and with no strings — on the registry findings page.

Transferring INTO Nebraska

Application fee: $0 · typical processing: Up to 30 days after DHHS receives a complete application. DHHS Interstate Endorsement application: you must be active on the other state's registry, have completed a minimum 75-hour nurse aide training program, have passing written and clinical exam scores, and have nurse aide employment in the last 24 months (unless you tested in the last 24 months). Every aide coming into Nebraska must also complete Nebraska's 1-hour in-service on reporting abuse and neglect before being made active. Retest condition: if you have not worked or tested within 24 months, you must pass the Nebraska competency exam. Work-history requirement: Nurse aide employment within the last 24 months (waived if you passed a competency exam within the last 24 months). Trap: if you have EVER been active on the Nebraska Nurse Aide Registry, you are not eligible for interstate endorsement at all; you must reactivate by retesting or employment verification instead. No registry endorsement fee; secondary fee tables list a possible $25-$30 cost for the abuse/neglect training itself.

The table below is computed for an active aide in good standing, trained to the origin state's standard hours. Your own hours or status can change your row — run the transfer checker with your real facts.
