Vermont CNA certification: stay active, lapse, and transfer rules

To renew you must have worked at least 50 days (400 hours) of paid LNA practice, or other paid work that reinforces LNA skills, under licensed nurse supervision in the 2 years before renewal. Vermont's 400-hour bar is far higher than the federal 8-hour minimum used in most states.

Is my certification still active?

If you have never worked for pay since certifying, use your certification date.

Continuing educationNo continuing education is required to renew an LNA license. Nursing homes must separately give nurse aides at least 12 hours of in-service training a year, but OPR does not track it for renewal.

If your Vermont certification has lapsed

The cheaper route — while it lasts

If you did not meet the 400-hour practice rule and your license has been lapsed for fewer than 5 years, you can renew by taking and passing the LNA written and skills examinations again. A license expired up to 2 years can be reinstated by meeting the renewal requirements plus late penalties; after 2 years a reinstatement application and a new criminal background check are required.

Past that line

If you did not meet the practice rule and your license has been lapsed for 5 years or more, you must repeat a nursing assistant education program and pass the written and skills examinations.

Trap: LNA licenses run on fixed two-year periods and your expiration date is printed on your license — a first license can run well under 2 years. (Secondary sites print a single statewide expiry date; OPR's rules do not — go by the date on your license.) Late penalties start at $100 in the first 30 days and rise monthly, up to $1,500. Work in a job that does not require an LNA license only counts if you upload the job description plus an employer letter on company letterhead with dates and hours; OPR audits a random share of renewals. Vermont keeps licensure (OPR LNA license) and the federal findings list (Division of Licensing and Protection) as two separate records.

Transferring INTO Vermont

Application fee: $25 · typical processing: Most completions reported at 2 to 4 weeks after application, fee, exam scores and fingerprint clearance are all on file (secondary reports; not stated on the OPR pages reviewed).. You must be active and in good standing on another state's nurse aide registry, hold a current nursing-assistant license or certification from a jurisdiction whose standards are substantially equivalent to Vermont's, submit fingerprint clearance through VCIC, and qualify either by work experience (at least 50 days / 400 hours of nurse aide work under a licensed nurse in the last 2 years) or by education (your training program verifies your education). Work-history requirement: 400 hours (50 days) of nurse aide work under licensed nurse supervision in the 2 years before applying, for the work-experience route.. Vermont publishes its fees in statute (26 V.S.A. § 1577): the nursing assistant application fee is $25 — endorsement is an application, there is no separate endorsement fee — and biennial renewal is $65. Secondary figures of $20 or $80 are stale. Note that endorsement with no exam is conditional in Vermont: you must show 400 hours (50 days) of nursing-assistant employment in the 2 years before applying, or qualify through Fast Track Endorsement (licensed in good standing elsewhere for 3+ years).

The table below is computed for an active aide in good standing, trained to the origin state's standard hours. Your own hours or status can change your row — run the transfer checker with your real facts.
